Mixed Bag of Chickens

This is my crooked tailed Hamburg rooster. He is tiny and quiet, but neat to look at. He has no hens to watch as he is too young.

This is one of three Buff Bantam hens I got to be broody mom hens for this year. These girls are tiny and can fit in your pocket. One is broody and is setting on her first clutch of 4 eggs. I added Bantams to my flock to be my chick incubators. I have seen their devotion as mothers in the past. The only downside is snakes will kill them more easily than the larger hens. And that is why I am adding new ones to my flock.

Three white mix chicks and one Specked Sussex bantam hen. All enjoying the setting sun.

One of two Yokohama roosters I was given this year. I like their long tail feathers and their strong leadership over their hens. This one has 20 hens to watch.

The Mighty Seven

This is my game hen Whitey. She is an older hen that goes broody every winter because she is just that special. This past Christmas she hatched 7 chicks from 6 eggs. Yup, I had a double yoke under her that I did not think would hatch.

All chicks have survived and thrived since she is such a good hen.

They all fly and keep up with mom. In this last photo you can see the twin grey chicks next to mom. One chick is slightly larger than its twin but are marked the same.

Blue Andalusian Rooster

This is my buddy rooster. He runs up to me and taps on my window when I am inside the house. He is always begging for bread treats.

I bought him in a mixed bunch of rooster chicks about 6 months ago. I was low on new bloodlines for my flock of hens.

I think he will make another good rooster for my girls.

Araucana Red Rooster

A month ago I purchased a cage of mixed roosters at auction. This giant was in the mix, an Araucana rooster. What is so good about him? He can give me blue/green egg layers in this years hatch. He is a large boy and stands about 3 feet tall. It will be an interesting experiment for my flock.
